I'm so grateful for the chance to share my recent experience at the 2024 volunteer appreciation event hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay (BBBSTB). This event was a beautiful reminder of the meaningful impact nonprofits like BBBSTB have on the lives of their volunteers, fostering connections and supporting powerful mentorships.
My personal journey with BBBSTB began over a decade ago, inspired by a friend who shared her own story as a “BIG.” It was a time in my personal life where I felt I was starting over, and I really wanted a family and a child in my life. When I became a "BIG," I started one of the most important relationships of my life, with my "Little" Alyssa.
We spent nearly five years creating memories, volunteering together, and we served with many organizations, but one of our favorites was the holiday tent at Metropolitan Ministries. Our relationship blossomed from mentorship into family when I became her foster parent in 2017, and I am incredibly grateful for the journey we’ve shared.
During the BBBSTB volunteer appreciation event, I was honored to share my story alongside many other BIGs and alumni. The team truly exceeded expectations, creating an evening filled with gratitude, connection, and celebration.
Held at a lovely venue with great food and a welcoming atmosphere, the event highlighted four qualities that make volunteer experiences memorable:
Begin and End with Gratitude: The entire evening was centered around saying “thank you” to every volunteer, making us feel valued and appreciated.
Facilitate Storytelling and Connection: By honoring various matches and stories, BBBSTB created an environment where volunteers could share their own journeys and form connections.
Cultivate New Relationships: I connected with other inspiring BIGs, like Melanie and Tracey, through shared experiences and stories, deepening our bond as a community.
Exceed Expectations: BBBSTB didn’t shy away from sharing their need for more volunteers and resources, inspiring us all to continue supporting their mission by sharing our stories.
This experience reminded me of the impact we can have as nonprofits and individuals when we create meaningful, gratitude-filled connections. Thank you, BBBSTB, for this memorable event and for the incredible work you do every day!
